Everything Must Perish
Two years after "Implode," Bill Leeb is back at the controls of Front Line Assembly with the new track "Everything Must Perish," showing off just how "dancey" and "groovy" the new Epitaph album may sound. Beginning with some creative synth/bass work and later kicking in with a speeded up R&B loop used in the Jeniffer Lopez song "I Feel So Good," there's certainly a more straightforward approach on the song than in previous FLA works, lacking the sort of complex and epic quality of the intros FLA usually had in previous albums. The first verse further backs this up as we hear more of Peterson's synthwork backed up by a beat straight from the Hybrid remix of Moby - Bodyrock, overlayed with Bill Leeb's whispy vocals. The vocal effects are not as heavy or as dark as before, utilizing the new style of stuttering vocals popular in the latest tracks by BT and Hybrid.
The result seems to work musically as the sound is certainly heavy, but loses some of the darkness usually present in FLA due to the lack of atmospheres and vocal samples. Only once we are treated to a reprocessed sample from the Prophecy intro and that is really all the track offers in terms of atmospheres, heavily relying on dance beats and synth work instead. All this, however, can surely be forgiven when the choruses (yes, there are two of them) come in, certainly revealing a more melodic Front Line Assembly than ever before as the chord progressions and melodies on the track are one of the best I've heard so far. The lyrics are much lighter than before and more personal, much like the ones introduced in Implode's "Unknown Dreams," revealing a new territory for Bill Leeb while even includes words never heard before in the FLA territory, such as "birds" and "snow."
In conclusion, I would say that this is definitely a very commerical track which may lure new fans by offering a more friendly, lighter version of Front Line Assembly. Being a big fan of Hybrid, I can say that this new style definitely appeals to me as it offers the best of both Hybrid-style beats and FLA melodies. However, I certainly hope that the album is more diverse than this track, as suggested by Chris Peterson, because essentialy, Everything Must Perish is a stripped down, dance-friendly version of FLA. It still gives me the chills whenever I hear that chorus and I wish it all the best in gaining new fans for Front Line Assembly, but I certainly hope that the new album will bring more to the current sound than what I've heard from this track.

Bill Leeb has been extremely active with Delerium over the last months [sic.], so much we even thought that FLA would become for him a low flame activity, but he takes us by surprise with this new single 'Everything [Must] Perish' on which he combines the warm and melodic side of the latest FLA releases with the force of the intricate cyber electronics of what is seen as the Canadian band's golden period. All I can say is that the title song is for me one of the best Front Line Assembly single[s] I have ever heard blowing away any 'Virus' or 'Iceolate'. The maxi also features an exclusive track making the bridge between FLA and Delerium featuring Jennifer McLaren on vocals. I'm looking forward to the full length album. What a pleasure to see a band like FLA strike back with such elegance and force. [TSF: 9/10]
