Review
Shifting Through The Lens comes in with an up tempo rhythm before an EBM beat defines the track structure fully. Slightly distorted vocals. Strong chorus which is fairly reminiscent of Hard Wired era material. Sweeping keys in the background. A fairly typical FLA dance track that holds its own.
Angriff starts with melancholy keys before a chunky bass comes in, then... CHUGA! CHUGA! GUITAR!! Bill has indicated that this song is about Russia, the Russians fallen in war. Also relating that his mother fled from Russia to Austria during WWII. The track is medium paced, but hard and heavy, whilst retaining that melancholy edge throughout.
Endless Void is a length ambient instrumental. Nice to see the single format utilised for this type of track, which FLA excel at. They don't crop up on the albums so much now. This is very much in the vein of early Delerium or Synaesthesia material, even including church bells and harpsichord type key work. So good to have this sound back, it would be great to more of this stuff, that early Delerium sound is sorely missed.
Bill Leeb's own comments on these tracks are given below. These first appeared on http://www.reybee.com
Shifting Through The Lens
We needed a single for the record and felt that, due to FLA’s alternative club play, that this would be the perfect track. This track seemed to really gel and brought us together and got us really excited about the record. If there was ever a time to pick an obvious club hit, this was it. We'd like to give honorable mention to Craig Huxtable for making his electronic contributions. Have you ever peered in a dark keyhole and saw something you were not supposed to?
Angriff
This song reflects the first time FLA landed in Russia. This struck an emotion for me as my mother was born in Russia and fled to Austria during the war. The band visited several prolific Russian monuments - one specifically being The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Red Square. This particularly inspired this track: the history of the country, the industrial symbolism, and the hardship of the land.
